
The facility also has an education and programming building, a gym and a large outdoor recreation yard. MED also has several correctional industries which include a garment and furniture/upholstery shop, a license plate shop, and carpentry and auto body shops. Extensive programming is provided with the goal of preparing inmates for successful return to their communities. The facility has the highest inmate bed capacity figure of any RIDOC facility, with 1,186 available beds. The facility grounds cover 29 acres and houses sentenced adult male offenders classified as medium custody. Moran Medium Security Facility (MED) was constructed from 1990 to 1992, for a cost of $65,000,000. Through this program the State recognizes that “public art creates a more humane environment: one of distinction, enjoyment, and pride for all citizens.” Artwork for the Barry, Rush and Simpson Building lobbies, located in the Pastore Complex, Cranston, Rhode Island will be commissioned by the Rhode Island State Council On the Arts, (RISCA), through the state’s Public Art Law, which mandates that 1% of all state capital construction and renovation funds be allocated to the purchase and maintenance of public art.
